Description

Thank you so much, my friends, for suggesting dithering to combat walking background noise the other day. Sometimes it pays to be lazy but not in AP. It did work indeed. In its Live Stack mode I have set SharpCap Pro so as it dithered every 5th frame randomly with a maximum amount of 5 pixels while saving FITS files separately for further processing in Siril. Teamed up with dark frames noise was cancelled out leaving a clean and even background, a child's play for Siril's background extraction job.

This is good news indeed as I no longer need to kick against a tripod leg to accomplish dithering. It was hard to keep it within 5 pixels. Remaining homework includes autoguiding accuracy which was not at its best (polar alignment and weight balancing).

Having missed most of the summer targets I made use of a few hours clear sky and pointed the gear to the Trifid Nebula, one of the many gems in the Milky Way crossing Sagittarius.

The image in Rev B shows the Western Veil Nebula which I captured with the same settings after the Trifid until clouds closed the party abruptly like a cop raid. It would take much longer than 80 minutes to unveil the faint veil in its glory.

The other images are wide fields taken in parallel and centered on the Trifid and the Veil with the Samyang 135mm and a DSLR, both 60 sec at ISO640. Since their exposure time and interval cannot be sync'ed with the CMOS camera they were messed up by dithering which occured amid exposures. Work for the trash bin (though the impact often was hardly obvious owing to the wider field).

Of great help was plate solving with SharpCap/ASTAP/EQMOD and a Bathinov mask. Also employed SharpCap's FHWM filter. You never can tell. Light frames were not needed probably because of the relatively small (and personally cleaned) IMX585 camera sensor. Now I wish I had the cooled version of the Uranus-C, though the difference between the sensor temperature (31°C) and ambient was merely 4°C attesting that passive cooling works to some extend though better in winter.
